Clinical sites

Our residency program is proud of our large medical campus with a wide variety of clinical sites and opportunities to serve diverse patient populations. All of our inpatient and outpatient sites are located within walking distance of each other (<1 mile), and the medical campus is easily accessible by public transportation or major highways.

Jackson Memorial Hospital

Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) serves as the main clinical site for the internal medicine training program. One of the largest public hospitals in the United States, Jackson Memorial is renowned for its commitment to providing exceptional care to a diverse community. It is also the third-largest teaching hospital in the United States, fostering an academic environment that supports the education and training of housestaff to continue producing excellent physicians. It is the only county hospital serving Miami-Dade, Jackson Memorial Hospital has over 1550 inpatient beds and allows clinicians the opportunity to provide care to the most underserved populations. In so doing, our residents not only have experience with a wide range of pathologies but also a greater understanding of what it truly means to provide healthcare. Jackson Memorial Hospital is a level 1 trauma center, serves as a referral hospital for the Caribbean, and also is one of the top transplant centers in the USA by volume of transplants performed.

University of Miami, UHealth

UHealth is the University of Miami’s Health System, including the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics (UMHC), UHealth Tower, Sylvester Comprehensive Care Center, and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. The University of Miami purchased Cedars Medical Center in late 2007. The facility was renamed UHealth Tower and became the region's first university-owned, multi-specialty, acute care hospital and the flagship facility of the University of Miami Health System. With 560 private rooms, UHealth Tower provides patients with personalized treatment in a high-quality environment. Housestaff have the opportunity to rotate through a private hospital doing inpatient wards, medical consult services, inpatient gastroenterology/hepatology, cardiovascular intensive care unit, and quality improvement rotations.

The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) is South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Cancer Center and the largest provider of all-inclusive interdisciplinary care for cancer patients in the region. SCCC also houses a bone marrow transplant unit, allowing for tremendous exposure to all aspects of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Research opportunities also abound as Sylvester physicians and patients are engaged in numerous innovative clinical trials.

Miami VA Medical Center

The Bruce W. Carter Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) is located across the street from Jackson Memorial Hospital. It serves the veterans of three South Florida counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe) and is the tertiary referral center for the West Palm Beach VAMC. The VAMC has more than 300 beds, including Cardiac and Medical Intensive Care Units. There are a multitude of inpatient and outpatient rotations that our housestaff can experience at this institution. The VA staffs four inpatient general medicine teams, the progressive care unit, MICU, and an inpatient geriatrics service. Other clinical opportunities include specialty clinics, palliative care, quality improvement and patient safety (IQRS).  One-third of our residents hold their continuity clinic at the VA and provide primary care within the multidisciplinary patient-aligned care team approach (PACT) developed to better serve our veterans.

 Ambulatory sites

Residents can be assigned to one of three continuity clinic sites based on preferences at which they will develop their practice over the three years of residency. Each site is unique in terms of patient population and mode of healthcare delivery, providing diverse opportunities to learn outpatient medicine. Regardless, all residents have the opportunity to care for “walk-in” patients at each clinic site.

Ambulatory Care Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital
Jackson’s Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) West Academic Internal Medicine Primary Care clinic is one of the major safety net clinics in Miami. The clinic serves a population that is multicultural and predominantly low income. Many of the clinic’s patients were born outside the U.S.  Residents at ACC are supervised closely by an attending physician, but are also given significant responsibility managing a panel of patients with complex medical, social, and psychological needs. Many residents find the experience extremely gratifying, as their patients rely on them as their primary care provider.

Miami VA Medical Center
The Miami VA Medical Center caters to the military veteran population and their dependents, providing exposure to some of the unique medical conditions prevalent in our patient population as well as universally applicable principles of primary care.  Each patient at the VA is assigned to a teamlet in a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT), which includes an attending, residents, an RN, LPN, and a clerk who function as an interdisciplinary unit. The PACT medical home model serves to coordinate care, ensure access to care and continuity, and provide opportunities for panel management and process improvement using quality indicators.

University of Miami Professional Arts Center (PAC)
The ambulatory clinic at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics is a resident-faculty practice created in 2010.  Four interns join the practice group each year and are fully integrated with the faculty and staff as partners.  The goal is to expose interns and residents to the world of private practice.  Our patient population consists primarily of adults with private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid.  Residents are incorporated into patient care teams consisting of 2 attendings, 4 residents/interns, and 1 medical assistant. The residents manage a panel of patients, learn how to navigate the “world of insurance”, and explore new innovations in health care.   We prepare residents for what we believe is the future of medicine by providing opportunities to integrate quality indicators, process improvement and population health management into routine patient care.
