Breno Bernardes de Souza, M.D. Chief Medical Resident - Ambulatory Care Center (ACC)/Primary Care
Medical School: Federal University of Ouro Preto School of Medicine
Dr. Bernardes was born and raised in Brazil and graduated from the Federal University of Ouro Preto School of Medicine. He is the proud founder of EAT-Brazil (Education Against Tobacco - Brazil), an NGO he led from 2016 to 2021 that grew to span more than 40 Brazilian medical schools, delivering tobacco prevention education to over 15,000 adolescents each year. After a postdoctoral research year at the UCLA Cardiac Arrhythmia Center, he began internal medicine residency at UM/JMH, where he cultivated his passion for preventive cardiology and longitudinal care. As chief resident, Breno is excited to support resident education and to strengthen continuity of care in the clinics. In his free time, he enjoys horseback riding, kayaking, and exploring new cuisines.
Mashli Fleurestil, M.D. Chief Medical Resident - Jackson Memorial Hospital
Medical School: Tulane University School of Medicine
Dr. Fleurestil was born and raised in Miami, of Haitian descent. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and her medical degree at Tulane, where she helped lead diabetes education courses with the Healthy Heart Community Project and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. During residency at UM/JMH, she participated in the Cardiology Pathway, was inducted into AOA, and remained engaged in community health through DOCS and other local health fairs. As a chief resident, her goal is to help residents strengthen their clinical reasoning while expanding the program's outreach to local high schools. Her professional interest is cardiovascular disease prevention and risk factor modification in minority patient populations. Outside of work, she enjoys functional fitness competitions with her husband and time with family and friends.
Christian Guilliod, M.D. Chief Medical Resident - Miami VA Medical Center
Medical School: Universidad Central de Venezuela – Escuela de Medicina Luis Razetti
Dr. Guilliod was born and raised in Venezuela and graduated as valedictorian from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Luis Razetti School of Medicine. He came to Miami for internal medicine residency at UM/JMH, where he developed interests in pulmonary and critical care medicine, pulmonary vascular disease, shock physiology, clinical trial representation, and medical education. During residency, he participated in the Medical Education and Cardiology Pathways, co-founded Medicina Destilada, a Spanish-language internal medicine education platform for learners across Latin America, and worked with the Heart Failure Collaboratory studying demographic representation in heart failure clinical trials, with a focus on Hispanic and other underrepresented populations. As chief resident at the Miami VA, he is excited to support resident education, clinical reasoning, feedback, and curriculum development. In his free time, Christian enjoys surfing, kitesurfing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, playing bass and guitar, reading, and building digital education tools.
Brianna Mussman, M.D., M.P.H. Chief Medical Resident - UHealth Tower/University of Miami Hospital
Medical School: University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
Dr. Mussman was born and raised in New Jersey, then earned her undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Brandeis University. In her prior work in New York City, she managed a non-profit high school health center and was a Health Educator; these passions led her to pursue a career in medicine, for which she came to Miami for medical school, her Masters in Public Health, and residency—and is happy to be a Triple ‘Cane. During residency at UM/JMH, she participated in the Medical Education Pathway and Hospital Administration Pathway. As chief resident, she mentors residents who prepare morning reports and chalk talks during their teaching electives. She has professional interests in teaching clinical reasoning and development of clinical skills, and she is pursuing a career as an academic hospitalist. In her free time, she enjoys cooking new foods, watercolor painting, and spending time outside near any body of water.
Clara Oh, M.D. Chief Medical Resident - Miami VA Medical Center
Medical School: University of Missouri School of Medicine
Dr. Oh was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. She earned a B.A. in Biology and Finance at Washington University in Saint Louis. After college, she donned a lab coat and goggles to study cancer genomics, before pursuing a medical degree at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Her academic interests are in translational and precision oncology, particularly in targeted therapy and the tumor microenvironment. As chief resident of the Miami VA, she is focused on building an innovative evidence-based medicine curriculum, and is excited to mentor residents throughout their clinical and personal journey with the program. In her free time, you can find her fully protected from the sun, enjoying the beach, planning her next travels, learning new languages, and dancing along to K-pop music.
Ana Piñon-Quintero, M.D. Chief Resident in Quality and Safety (CRQS) - Miami VA Medical Center
Medical School: FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine
Dr. Pinon was born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Miami. She stayed close to home for her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, training in the community that shaped her. During medical school, she was recognized with a distinction in Service Excellence and inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She led the school's community health fairs and organized the Mammography Art Initiative, helping raise over $75,000 for free diagnostic mammograms for underserved women. As a resident, she continued this work through the Urban Health Pathway, deepening her focus on underserved care and health equity. Her academic interests include pulmonary and critical care medicine, graduate medical education, and healthcare quality and safety. Now as Chief Resident in Quality and Safety at the Miami VA, her current work centers on sepsis-related quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving early recognition and management. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family, including a new baby and her two dogs, dancing salsa, playing pickleball and DIY projects.
Shanice Spence-Miller, M.D. Chief Medical Resident - Jackson Memorial Hospital
Medical School: University of the West Indies (Mona), Jamaica
Dr. Shanice Spence-Miller was born and raised in Jamaica and graduated with honors from the University of the West Indies, Mona. Before residency at UM/JMH, she practiced Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine in Western Jamaica. During residency, she participated in the Medical Education and Pulmonary & Critical Care pathways. She co-developed the Internal Medicine Community Visiting Scholars Program, securing grant funding to provide visiting medical students with clinical exposure, and longitudinal mentorship; this work earned recognition through a CIR Women in Medicine Award. As chief resident, she is particularly passionate about resident education, mentorship, clinical reasoning, curriculum development, and creating opportunities for residents to explore both traditional and non-traditional career pathways within medicine. She created IMCore©, the residency program’s centralized digital platform, and founded the Data Science, Artificial Intelligence & Health Informatics Collaborative. Across these efforts, her work is driven by a broader interest in improving two interconnected systems: how physicians are trained and how patients are cared for. Her academic interests center on curriculum innovation and the thoughtful integration of artificial intelligence into both medical education and clinical practice. Outside of medicine, she enjoys reading thriller novels, live music, playing tennis, being near the water, developing digital tools, and spending time with God and her family.
Xena Zheng, M.D. Chief Resident in Quality and Safety (CRQS) - Miami VA Medical Center
Medical School: Louisiana State University School of Medicine New Orleans
Dr. Zheng is a New Orleans native who earned a B.A. in Economics and Chemistry from Brown University and her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, graduating with Honors in Health Policy. She is committed to advancing public health and pursuing a career in academic medical oncology, with particular interest in thoracic oncology, precision medicine, and health equity. Her health policy work includes research and advocacy on medically tailored meals which helped lead to the Louisiana Department of Health's approval of the In Lieu Of (ILO) Policy for Home-Delivered Meals. At the Miami VA, her work focuses on improving cancer screening, reducing diagnostic delays, and streamlining time to treatment, with the goal of ensuring timely, equitable cancer care for veterans. Outside of medicine, she can be found paddleboarding through Miami's waterways, going to Pilates classes, dancing to EDM, and answering to her two cats, who run a tight household.
Internal Medicine-Pediatrics (MedPeds) chief residents 2026-2027
Daniel Schwartzbaum, M.D., M.Sc., Chief Resident for Internal Medicine-Pediatrics
Dr. Schwartzbaum is a lifelong Miami native born and raised on the beach. After a brief four-year stint at Johns Hopkins University for his undergraduate education, he returned home to attend the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for a combined MD/MSc in Genomic Medicine and then stayed for residency in the UM/Jackson Internal Medicine-Pediatrics program. His undergraduate work in community teaching in childhood health risk factors and family health literacy carried into a passion for medical education, which he pursued via the Medical Education residency track and in his role as chief resident. He hopes to marry his combined interest in pediatric & young adult care, genomics, and cancer care in a career in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. Outside of the hospital, Daniel enjoys scenic runs by Miami’s waterfronts, literary fiction & fantasy novels, home cooking & baking ventures (some more successful than others), and bowing to the will of his cat Luna.
