Harrington Program

The William J. Harrington Medical Training Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean
    
The Harrington Programs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are comprised of three programs:  Categorical Residency Training in Internal Medicine and Observerships through the Elective Program for Latin American Physicians and the Medical Student Program.

    The housestaff training program is an extension of the age-old tradition of providing state-of-the art medical education to those physicians from Latin America and the Caribbean with lesser resources and opportunities.  Rigorously selected medical graduates are accepted for training after successfully passing the USMLE examinations, and are completely integrated into our regular residency program. Having started as a group of three physicians in 1967, the Program has grown substantially over the years and by flexible agreement with the Department of Medicine, 12 first year residency positions are dedicated each year to applicants from the Harrington Programs.  Although travel expenses are not provided, salary and benefits equal to the other housestaff are offered.  Three hundred forty seven trainees from Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and over 15 other Latin American and Caribbean countries have been accepted for training since the Program was founded.

    The goal of the Program is to train physicians who, upon completion of their training, will return to their home countries with knowledge and experience that, otherwise, would be impossible to obtain.  Faculty positions typically await the physicians upon return to their home country.

    Candidates must be enrolled in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
